Awful Auntie at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday

AWFUL AUNTIEPrepare for a theatrical treat as David Walliams' acclaimed children's novel, Awful Auntie, comes to life on stage at Milton Keynes Theatre until 2nd November 2024.

Brought to you by the renowned Birmingham Stage Company, this production promises an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages.

Awful Auntie tells the captivating story of young Stella Saxby, who, after a mysterious accident, finds herself under the dubious care of her Aunt Alberta. As Stella uncovers her aunt's sinister intentions, she embarks on a thrilling adventure filled with humour, suspense, and unexpected allies. The stage adaptation features a delightful ensemble, including a mischievous ghost, a formidable owl, and, of course, the formidable Aunt Alberta herself.

Lucy from 1055 The Point went to see the show, and this is what she thought:

“I had no idea what to expect from the show, having never read a David Walliams book before. The set design was incredible. It was spooky and impressive in its technical setup. The staging wasn’t the only really impressive aspect of it either—Emily Essery’s puppetry of Wagner was mesmerising.

The use of puppets for every character to show that the action was happening outside was really clever and fun. It was clear throughout that all the young members of the audience were having a great time. They laughed in all the correct places—particularly at the toilet humour.

The cast were all impressively committed to their roles, and annunciated their lines beautifully for their young target audience. The only difficulty I had was with how loud the music was at times—it made hearing some lines difficult, and I imagine it would make watching the show challenging for any child with a neurodiversity. Overall, I’m sure any child who enjoys a Walliams’ book would love the show. I must also congratulate the Birmingham Stage Company on the clever way of concealing the story’s twist in how they handled the cast information in the programme...I won’t say any more; otherwise, that might ruin it for anybody that doesn’t already know the story.”
