MK Gallery Marks 25 Years with Major Warhol Exhibition
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, MK Gallery is bringing the iconic work of Andy Warhol back to Milton Keynes, nearly a quarter of a century after the "Cars" series graced its walls in 2001.
"Andy Warhol: Portrait of America," an Artist Rooms partnership exhibition with Tate and National Galleries of Scotland, opens this Saturday, March 15th, and runs for three months. The exhibition features over 130 of Warhol's seminal artworks, including the celebrated Marilyn series and portraits of British artists Gilbert & George, who were the focus of MK Gallery's debut exhibition in 1999.
A central figure in American Pop art, Warhol's work from the 1950s to 1980s will be on display, showcasing his early drawings, painted silkscreens, and photographic series, highlighting his collaborations with artists, friends, filmmakers, and celebrities.
Images of Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, and Warhol himself are presented alongside symbols of American consumerism and his fascination with mortality: guns, skulls, and war.
Warhol's exploration of celebrity and commercial culture yielded some of the most recognizable images in 20th-century art. After establishing himself as a successful illustrator in 1950s New York, he developed the signature styles and techniques that propelled him to the forefront of America's cultural landscape. He passed away in 1987.
"Andy Warhol is a name everyone recognizes, but perhaps without fully understanding why," stated Anthony Spira, Director of MK Gallery. "We are thrilled to bring this exhibition to Milton Keynes, 25 years after his work was first shown here."
"MK Gallery collaborates with local, national, and international partners to deliver exceptional cultural experiences to the region. In addition to our exhibitions, we host workshops, talks, and conferences, showcasing both emerging and established talent."
